Shireen of al-Walaja by Daz Chandler & Q&A with Aaron Kearney / Watt Space / Community and Alumni / Events / The University of Newcastle, Australia
Please join us on 11 November at 4pm for the screening of Shireen of al-Walaja, followed by Q&A with filmmaker Daz Chandler and Walkley Award winning broadcaster and former ABC Newcastle Presenter, Aaron Kearney
Shireen of al-Walaja is an intimate portrait of the day-to-day life of a dynamic popular resistance leader from Palestine who left her full-time job with the UN to return to her home village of al-Walaja and fight for its survival. Shot on location over a four-year-period, ‘Shireen of al-Walaja’ examines the philosophical and psychological drivers behind tireless resistance, providing a refreshingly candid and inspiring insight into just what it is that motivates someone to become a full-time activist.
Daz Chandler is an award-winning Newcastle-born filmmaker and inter-disciplinary storyteller with a background in broadcast journalism and presenting for radio and TV. She’s into material that challenges preconceived ideas, unpacks philosophical questions around life, death and identity or strives to create instances of social engagement, or points of connection between unlikely parties. She also enjoys developing projects that indulge her dark sense of humour and flirt with the surreal or unexpected.
